SUMMARY:Intro to Kintsugi Workshop
DESCRIPTION:KINTSUGI = Japanese pottery repair at STARFIELD \nUnleash your creativity and learn the art of Kintsugi\, the ancient Japanese pottery repair technique\, in our hands-on workshop.  \nRegister for the MONDAY\, Sept 29 Workshop through this link. \nIn the art form of Kintsugi\, broken pieces are reassembled\, and cracks are highlighted rather than hidden. When joined with the traditional urushi lacquer\, repairs can take weeks or even months as each curing step can require 2-7 days in the muro (a humid curing box). In this class\, we will use a quick-cure epoxy\, allowing you to go home at the end of the day with a final piece. This is a nice way to get started since urushi lacquer is so time-intensive – and slightly hazardous! \nMaterials and instruction fee: $100 total \nClass size is limited to six to allow for individualized instruction. \nSaturday\, 27 September\, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – SOLD OUT \nSunday\, 28 September\, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – SOLD OUT \nMonday\, 29 September\, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm – SPACES LEFT!! \n  \nImages: Courtesy of the Artist \nInstructor – Quantum Wei\nQuantum first started practicing Kintsugi in 2021 when he wanted to fix a broken souvenir plate (two pieces\, epoxy + liquid gold leaf). Since then\, he has ventured deeper into the art by working on more complex breaks and utilizing traditional materials (urushi lacquer)\, and constructing a muro (wooden curing box). During his latest trip to Japan\, he took a workshop with kintsugi master David Pike. For more\, visit kinstugi.boston. \nMaterial Supplied\nEpoxy\, liquid gold leaf\, painter’s tape\, sandpaper\, rubber bands\, etc. \nStudents Should Bring\nYour own pieces of broken pottery to repair. Keep it simple (not too many pieces). \nPrerequisites\nAll ages are welcome. All students under 18 must be accompanied by and under the direct supervision of a responsible adult.

SUMMARY:Miranda Aisling Folk Concert
DESCRIPTION:MIRANDA AISLING FOLK CONCERT at Starfield\, the home of the Manship Artists Residency \nwith Matt Lefebvre on bass and Phil Benjamin on guitar \nSunday\, 21 September\, 2:00 pm \nJoin local interdisciplinary artist Miranda Aisling (ash-lean) for a folk concert at the Manship Artists Residency on Sunday\, September 21 at 2:00 PM. Aisling will be joined by musicians Matt Lefebvre on bass and Phil Benjamin on guitar\, adding rich layers to her evocative folk sound. Bring your lawn chair or blanket to enjoy this weather-dependent outdoor concert. \nAisling’s original folk songs blend frank vulnerability with insightful social commentary. A classically trained pianist who shifted from Bach to the Indigo Girls\, she brings the lively spirit of a folk festival to her performances\, engaging audiences with a mix of sung and spoken storytelling. \nAisling will be performing alongside “Gathering\,” an installation of her ceramic sculpture on display at Manship from August 22 – September 28. This outdoor installation is a continuation of her ongoing series\, the Chubby Clay Bodies\, a light-hearted\, celebratory exploration of the natural shapes and forms found both in people and in pottery. These voluptuous\, tactile pots are wheel-thrown and hand-altered in Aisling’s pottery studio in the Gloucester community of Lanesville. \nSince moving to Gloucester in 2019\, initially as one of the first artists in residence at the Manship Artists Residency\, Aisling has performed at the Manship Artists Residency\, the Rocky Neck Cultural Center\, the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation\, and MAGMA (Movement Arts\, Gloucester\, MA). As a member of the Treehouse Charlatans\, she has performed at the Lanesville Music Festival\, Ipswich Riverwalk\, Gloucester Block Party\, the Cape Ann Museum\, and Art in the Barn. \nRegister for concert online at this link. \nImage credit: Courtesy of the Artist

SUMMARY:Bowl Painting Event for The Open Door Food Pantry
DESCRIPTION:Hosted at Starfield \nEvery year our community comes together for one of its most beloved and important events – The Empty Bowl Dinner\, a fundraiser for The Open Door\, our local food pantry. Initiated in 2001 by Marty Morgan with the help of fellow potters\, community members now decorate the bowls at painting parties that are organized throughout the year. \nSeptember happens to be Hunger Action Month and you can take action to help end hunger! The bowl you are invited to come and paint for free will be given out at The Empty Bowl‘s fundraiser-dinner as a reminder that somewhere in our community someone’s bowl is empty. \nRegister for an opening on September 20 through this link. \nPlease note: \nYou just need to register for any open time slot on the Advance Registration page to be able to come and paint a bowl. \nTables will be set up with supplies so that anyone who is interested can participate and paint a bowl. There is no special registration page specifically for painting a bowl. \nAll are welcome! We will have enough bowls for everyone who signs up on September 20…. \nImage Courtesy The Open Door

SUMMARY:3-D Clay Printing Lecture and Demonstration - FULL
DESCRIPTION:Ellen Schön will give a lecture and demonstration discussing her journey from creating hand-made ceramics to 3D clay printing. This event is offered in conjunction with the Manship Artists Residency show\, Heavenly Earth. Suggested donation: $20. \nREGISTER FOR 3-D Printing Workshop \n  \nEllen Schön Brief Biography \nEllen Schön recently retired as Adjunct Professor in Fine Arts at Lesley University College of Art and Design in Cambridge\, MA\, where she taught ceramics and 3-D courses there since 2002. Schön earned a BA from Marlboro College (Ceramics and Perceptual Psychology) and an MFA in Ceramics from Boston University’s Program in Artisanry. \nSchön has organized and co-curated interdisciplinary\, thematic group exhibitions in non-profit venues in the Boston area and abroad. A member of the European Artists Association\, her interest in international artist collaboration and exchange has led her to travel extensively\, participating in international artist symposia/residencies in Denmark\, Finland\, Croatia\, Hungary\, Turkey\, Israel\, Germany\, and Malaysia. \nSchön won The Brother Thomas Fellowship Award and The Artist Foundation Fellowship from the Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanities. She was an Artist Fellow at the St. Botolph Club and is a member of the Boston Sculptors Gallery. Schön’s ceramic sculpture is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, and the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton\, MA. \n  \nEllen Schön Artist Statement \nInspired by diverse cultural traditions\, my recent ceramic work investigates 3D clay-printed vessels and totems\, alluding to both mathematical symmetries and to the human figure. I employ a variety of 3D modeling software\, primarily Blender\, Tinkercad\, and Rhino. There is an interesting tension between control in designing on the computer and chance in the printing of clay. Using this new technology has stimulated discovery\, expanding possibilities of scale and the ability to create more complex ceramic forms. My intention is what it always has been–to create unique\, personal forms which resonate\, whether they are functional\, metaphorical\, or somewhere in between. \nwww.ellenschon.com \n@ellenschonceramics

SUMMARY:Elaine Wing Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In the Manship Barn Studio \nOpening Reception: June 26\, 5:30 – 7:00 pm \nOpen Saturdays and Sundays through July 27\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm \nAnd by appointment \nRegister to attend the opening on June 26 \nRegister to visit the exhibition weekends\, June 28 – July 27 \nArtist Elaine Wing (born 1931) lived in Lanes Cove\, not far from the Manship Artists Residency. She now lives in Sante Fe\, which is a better environment for her health\, however her heart is still in Gloucester and held close by her many friends here. One of the latter is Manship Board Chair\, Jo-Ann Castano. When Elaine needed to close her studio two years ago\, she reached out to Jo-Ann and offered her paintings and monoprints to the Manship Artists Residency as a donation\, suggesting that we sell the work to raise funds to support artists. This wish is now a reality and you are able to enjoy the benefit by seeing a collection of her paintings of Cape Ann\, alongside some of her graphically-exciting\, and often cheeky monoprints. We also have works on loan from some of Elaine’s friends – captivating portraits that reveal her remarkable talent and their close connection. \nThis is your chance to see her work and\, perhaps\, pick out which magnificent piece you want to take home at the end of the exhibition. Select work will be for sale\, though all the work will need to remain until the exhibition closes. \nIn addition to creating signature paintings that have earned Elaine a place among the celebrated artists collected by the Cape Ann Museum\, Elaine and her former husband\, Paul Wing\, ran the Salamander Coffeehouse in Boston near Copley Square.  In the late 1950s and early 1960s\, they introduced musical artists who would later become famous\, such as Tom Rush and Joan Baez. \n  \nRegister to attend the opening on June 26 \nRegister to visit the exhibition weekends\, June 28 – July 27

SUMMARY:Manship Artist Andrew Yang in Conversation with Composer David Ibbett Event in Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:In CAMBRIDGE… \nCatalyst Conversations in partnership with Manship Artists Residency Presents \nConnecting the Spheres\, We Are Stardust  \nThursday\, May 29\, 6:00-7:00 pm \nRegister on EventBrite. \nStars have a life cycle: they’re born\, they pass through middle age\, and they die. The birth of a star determines much of how it lives that life. For that reason\, researchers study star-forming regions: the interstellar clouds of gas and dust that are both the raw materials and environment for star birth. \nManship Artist Andrew S. Yang\, Ph.D and Composer and Director of the Multiverse Concert Series\, David Ibbett\, Ph.D\, will explore the fascination we all have with our relationship to the celestial sphere on May 29 at the Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics\, Phillips Auditorium in Cambridge. \nAndrew S. Yang\, Ph.D\, who is the Jonathan Lash Endowed Chair Professor of Environmental Education and Sustainability at Hampshire College\, says “During my residency at Starfield\, I have been researching one of Paul Manship’s iconic work\, Celestial Sphere (1939)\, a large sculpture representing 66 different constellations drawn from various cultures.  Permanently installed at the United Nations in Geneva\, it is intended to convey a sense of both cosmic and geopolitical harmony. I am developing a piece called Terrestrial Sphere to re-interpret Manship’s work as one looking inward\, focused on the ecosystems of planet Earth that acknowledges animals as ecological agents rather than simply symbolic forms. I will talk about my site-specific\, research-based approach through this and other projects that entangle the terrestrial with the cosmological.” \n\n\n\nDavid Ibbett\, Ph.D. is a composer\, educator and musical advocate for science. Based in Boston\, he is a Professor at WPI and directs the Multiverse Concert Series\, a project that integrates music and science in live performance. In 2023\, David was named the first Resident Composer at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. David composes electrosymphonic music: a fusion of classical and electronic styles that interweaves influences from songs\, symphonies\, pop\, rock and electronica. Musical strands are met with inspiration from the work of scientists: sonified data\, musical metaphors for scientific theories\, and experimental sound and images from cutting edge research. Read more in Nature magazine and About on David’s website. \n\n\n\nThe night sky inspired Celestial Sphere\, one of Paul Manship’s most important sculptures. The work is a guide to the heavens\, an idealization of the Cosmos\, created in 1939 as a symbol of dialogue and peace. \nRegister on EventBrite. \nImage credit: The Celestial Sphere in progress\, Manship Family Archives

SUMMARY:Spirit Sensing Film and Live Performance at Harvard
DESCRIPTION:Spirit Sensing Film and Live Performance at Harvard \nThursday\, April 24 from 6-7 pm \nSpirit Sensing: Anima of the Quarry\, the short film based on an intuitive performance by Manship Artists Kyle Browne and Stan Strickland\, will be shown along with a live performance at Harvard University’s Program for the Evolution of Spirituality’s Spring 2025 Conference: Spirituality and the Arts on Thursday\, April 24 from 6-7 pm. In person registration is closed for this conference\, however\, you can sign up to attend virtually as many of the sessions will be streamed live. You can access the conference schedule here. You must register in advance to attend. \nThe performance was inspired by Browne’s explorations of the energy of the site and the belief in anima\, that all things have a consciousness. An interactive discussion with the audience will follow the screening and life performance with Manship Board member Ken Kinna\, who edited the film and who is responsible for shepherding the film’s tour at international short film festivals\, during which it has won numerous awards. \nThe film has only been shown at film festivals and during a fundraiser to support the film’s tour. In addition to signing up to attend the screening virtually on April 24\, for a limited time you can access the film through the conference’s virtual gallery. \nPhoto credit: Tsar Fedorsky
