SUMMARY:Slip Resist Raku with Scott Tubby
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, July 18 (10AM – 1PM) & Sunday\, July 19 (10AM – 3PM) for Slip Resist Raku with Scott Tubby: a 2-day workshop exploring the decorative technique of raku pottery. In this workshop\, participants will be using slip\, glaze recipes and methods developed by Kate and Will Jacobson\, originators of the technique\, to prep their pots for firing\, and then fire them in a specialty Raku kiln on the Manship property. Limited to 8 participants\, each participant can bring up to five bisque fired pots ranging in size from an orange up to 9” tall. **Please note: Vase forms work better in this technique than bowls. All pots fired in this technique will not hold water or food and are purely decorative. \nSlip Resist Raku\, or Naked Raku\, is a variation of Raku which is a 400-year-old Japanese firing technique. Slip (a liquid clay) is applied to the bisqued pot and then fired quickly in an outdoor kiln\, removed from the hot kiln\, placed in combustibles and then quenched in water where the slip pops off and reveals crackle patterns from the smoking process. It is a resist technique similar to Batik. \nREGISTER HERE.\n  \n\nAbout Scott: \nScott Tubby has been a potter for close to fifty years\, gaining recognition for his burnished and sagger fired porcelain pottery as well as his raku pottery. He has exhibited his work extensively over the years and three of his sagger fired pots are in the permanent collection of the Museum of American Art in the Smithsonian. He currently owns and operates a gallery in Rockport MA where he displays his pottery and oil paintings. \nScott’s work can be found on his website\, or on Instagram and Facebook @scotttubbyfineart.

Drawing on the go is a lifelong skill that enriches many creative pursuits. Participants can expect to build technique\, focus\, and flow while actively drawing outdoors. \nREGISTER HERE.\n  \n\n\nAbout Jeff:\nJeffrey H. Hayes is a multidisciplinary artist\, designer\, and drawing instructor whose work is rooted in deep observation and the expressive potential of the hand-drawn line. He credits his high school art teacher\, Joan Gitlow\, with teaching him how to truly see\, lessons that continue to shape his approach to drawing and visual storytelling. \nFor decades\, Jeffrey worked as an art director at advertising agencies serving Fortune 500 clients\, where his answer to most challenges was a hand-drawn! As a live illustrator\, he creates real-time drawings during innovation sessions\, using imagery to deepen engagement and spark ideas. He has recently added live Fashion Sketching to his services. Jeffrey exhibits in group shows\, enjoys collaborating with fellow artists and printmakers\, and on a good day\, keeps a lively stream of sketches flowing from his pen. \nJeff’s work can be found here on his website.
