She now lives in Sante Fe\, which is a better environment for her health\, however her heart is still in Gloucester and held close by her many friends here. One of the latter is Manship Board Chair\, Jo-Ann Castano. When Elaine needed to close her studio two years ago\, she reached out to Jo-Ann and offered her paintings and monoprints to the Manship Artists Residency as a donation\, suggesting that we sell the work to raise funds to support artists. This wish is now a reality and you are able to enjoy the benefit by seeing a collection of her paintings of Cape Ann\, alongside some of her graphically-exciting\, and often cheeky monoprints. We also have works on loan from some of Elaine’s friends – captivating portraits that reveal her remarkable talent and their close connection. \nThis is your chance to see her work and\, perhaps\, pick out which magnificent piece you want to take home at the end of the exhibition. Yang\, Ph.D\, who is the Jonathan Lash Endowed Chair Professor of Environmental Education and Sustainability at Hampshire College\, says “During my residency at Starfield\, I have been researching one of Paul Manship’s iconic work\, Celestial Sphere (1939)\, a large sculpture representing 66 different constellations drawn from various cultures.  Permanently installed at the United Nations in Geneva\, it is intended to convey a sense of both cosmic and geopolitical harmony. I am developing a piece called Terrestrial Sphere to re-interpret Manship’s work as one looking inward\, focused on the ecosystems of planet Earth that acknowledges animals as ecological agents rather than simply symbolic forms. I will talk about my site-specific\, research-based approach through this and other projects that entangle the terrestrial with the cosmological.” \n\n\n\nDavid Ibbett\, Ph.D. is a composer\, educator and musical advocate for science. The predominantly women-based block-printing collective was founded in Gloucester\, Massachusetts by Caldecott Award-winner and beloved children’s book author and illustrator Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios (of The Little House and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel fame).  \nOne of America’s longest-running artist collectives\, the trailblazing group produced more than three hundred distinct designs\, which they block printed onto fabric. The intricate eye-catching designs conveyed personal and regional narratives through the use of shared design principles and the compelling language of pattern. The group was propelled to international fame through commercial contracts with major retailers (F. Schumacher\, Lord & Taylor)\, articles in leading periodicals such as Life\, and participation in seminal fine craft exhibitions.  \nThe publication Trailblazing Women Printmakers documents and celebrates the group’s tremendous success and the remarkable artistry of its members. While work of the Folly Cove Designers continues to inspire contemporary printmakers around the globe\, particularly women printmakers\, it remains relatively unknown in a broader context which Sarni’s book seeks to redress. Trailblazing Women Printmakers is Sarni’s debut book and was awarded the 2024 Historic New England Book Prize. \nThe Manship family was related by marriage to several Folly Cove Designers. The acorn press formerly owned by designer Eino Natti is part of Manship Artists Residency’s collection. All levels of musicians and singers are encouraged to register for the workshops. \nBased out of Charlottesville\, Virginia\, the Fireballs are coming up to Cape Ann for a week of composing and rehearsing material for their debut album. The Five Cent Fireballs:Malia Furtado (fiddle\, mandolin\, vocals)\, Clara George (guitar\, keyboards\, Scruggs-style banjo\, vocals)\, and Emma McDowell (guitar\, fiddle\, mandolin\, clawhammer banjo\, vocals) bring together their own musical styles to create a perfect union of the alternative and bluegrass worlds. Using their collective expertise in community-based art and engagement\, quilting\, historical research\, and individual artistic practices\, these artists have conducted research and held several community conversations over the past two years. During this period\, they developed this summer’s outdoor installation at the Cape Ann Museum Green to explore and interpret the history of slavery on Cape Ann.  \nThe project has moved through four cycles\, each rooted in a week-long stay on Cape Ann: Reclamation\, Trade Winds\, Persistence\, and Honoring. The cumulative research and stories on display will feature six large ‘sail-quilts’.   \nDuring each cycle\, the artists conducted intimate investigations in the Cape Ann Museum Library & Archives and invited the community to consider the stories of the enslaved people of Cape Ann and the legacy of the slave economy for Cape Ann’s seaports. Parallel to their research\, the artists opened conversations with and between community members and institutions\, holding space within the collective for acknowledging\, grieving\, honoring\, and celebrating the enslaved and freed people of Cape Ann.   \nThe artists were brought together by the work of Doris Prouty\, an African American quilter who made Gloucester her home for nearly 50 years\, when her work was exhibited posthumously at the Cape Ann Museum in 2022. \nVessels of Slavery: Forget Me Not will be on display from August 10 – September 1\, 2024 at the Cape Ann Museum Green\, 13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA. The installation will be on view Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and Sundays from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. \nVessels of Slavery: Forget Me Not is coordinated and funded by the Cape Ann Museum with support from the MassHumanities Expanding Massachusetts Stories Grant and the Essex Heritage Partnership Grant.
