SUMMARY:Manship Artist Andrew Yang in Conversation with Composer David Ibbett Event in Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:In CAMBRIDGE… \nCatalyst Conversations in partnership with Manship Artists Residency Presents \nConnecting the Spheres\, We Are Stardust  \nThursday\, May 29\, 6:00-7:00 pm \nRegister on EventBrite. \nStars have a life cycle: they’re born\, they pass through middle age\, and they die. The birth of a star determines much of how it lives that life. For that reason\, researchers study star-forming regions: the interstellar clouds of gas and dust that are both the raw materials and environment for star birth. \nManship Artist Andrew S. Yang\, Ph.D and Composer and Director of the Multiverse Concert Series\, David Ibbett\, Ph.D\, will explore the fascination we all have with our relationship to the celestial sphere on May 29 at the Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics\, Phillips Auditorium in Cambridge. \nAndrew S. Yang\, Ph.D\, who is the Jonathan Lash Endowed Chair Professor of Environmental Education and Sustainability at Hampshire College\, says “During my residency at Starfield\, I have been researching one of Paul Manship’s iconic work\, Celestial Sphere (1939)\, a large sculpture representing 66 different constellations drawn from various cultures.  Permanently installed at the United Nations in Geneva\, it is intended to convey a sense of both cosmic and geopolitical harmony. I am developing a piece called Terrestrial Sphere to re-interpret Manship’s work as one looking inward\, focused on the ecosystems of planet Earth that acknowledges animals as ecological agents rather than simply symbolic forms. I will talk about my site-specific\, research-based approach through this and other projects that entangle the terrestrial with the cosmological.” \n\n\n\nDavid Ibbett\, Ph.D. is a composer\, educator and musical advocate for science. Based in Boston\, he is a Professor at WPI and directs the Multiverse Concert Series\, a project that integrates music and science in live performance. In 2023\, David was named the first Resident Composer at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. David composes electrosymphonic music: a fusion of classical and electronic styles that interweaves influences from songs\, symphonies\, pop\, rock and electronica. Musical strands are met with inspiration from the work of scientists: sonified data\, musical metaphors for scientific theories\, and experimental sound and images from cutting edge research. Read more in Nature magazine and About on David’s website. \n\n\n\nThe night sky inspired Celestial Sphere\, one of Paul Manship’s most important sculptures. The work is a guide to the heavens\, an idealization of the Cosmos\, created in 1939 as a symbol of dialogue and peace. \nRegister on EventBrite. \nImage credit: The Celestial Sphere in progress\, Manship Family Archives

SUMMARY:Spirit Sensing Film and Live Performance at Harvard
DESCRIPTION:Spirit Sensing Film and Live Performance at Harvard \nThursday\, April 24 from 6-7 pm \nSpirit Sensing: Anima of the Quarry\, the short film based on an intuitive performance by Manship Artists Kyle Browne and Stan Strickland\, will be shown along with a live performance at Harvard University’s Program for the Evolution of Spirituality’s Spring 2025 Conference: Spirituality and the Arts on Thursday\, April 24 from 6-7 pm. In person registration is closed for this conference\, however\, you can sign up to attend virtually as many of the sessions will be streamed live. You can access the conference schedule here. You must register in advance to attend. \nThe performance was inspired by Browne’s explorations of the energy of the site and the belief in anima\, that all things have a consciousness. An interactive discussion with the audience will follow the screening and life performance with Manship Board member Ken Kinna\, who edited the film and who is responsible for shepherding the film’s tour at international short film festivals\, during which it has won numerous awards. \nThe film has only been shown at film festivals and during a fundraiser to support the film’s tour. In addition to signing up to attend the screening virtually on April 24\, for a limited time you can access the film through the conference’s virtual gallery. \nPhoto credit: Tsar Fedorsky

SUMMARY:Declan Siefkas's Estuary Light Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Estuary Light Premiere\nApril 24 – 5:30 pm\, Moseley Chapel at The Governor’s Academy\, 1 Elm St\, Byfield\, MA \nDeclan Siefkas\, former Director of Choral Music at Governor’s Academy and now the Director of Music Technology at Phillips Academy\, has written a stunning piece under his 2024-25 Great Marsh Artists grant called Estuary Light\, which will premiere to the public for free. \nEstuary Light seeks to capture something of the peculiar beauty of the Great Marsh of Massachusetts. Composed after two months of immersive listening and sound recording in different areas along the marsh\, the piece draws upon the everyday rhythms\, routines\, and cycles of the marsh and its denizens. The tide\, the crickets\, the cycle of the sun\, and the songs of the birds all feature in musical form. \nPhoto courtesy of Louise Nelson

SUMMARY:Folly Cove Designers Talk and Book Signing with Author Elena Sarni
DESCRIPTION:Folly Cove Designers Talk and Book Signing with Author Elena Sarni \nTuesday\, April 22\, 5:30-6:30 pm \nManship Artists Residency and Rockport Public Library will present an hour-long book talk with Elena M. Sarni\, author of Trailblazing Women Printmakers: Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios and the Folly Cove Designers at Rockport Public Library at 5:30 pm on Tuesday\, April 22. The event is planned in coordination with Gather 2025\, a month-long exploration and celebration of fiber and textile art in the Greater Boston area. \nSarni was formerly the assistant curator at the Cape Ann Museum and her book is the first comprehensive history written about The Folly Cove Designers (1941-1969). The predominantly women-based block-printing collective was founded in Gloucester\, Massachusetts by Caldecott Award-winner and beloved children’s book author and illustrator Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios (of The Little House and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel fame).  \nOne of America’s longest-running artist collectives\, the trailblazing group produced more than three hundred distinct designs\, which they block printed onto fabric. The intricate eye-catching designs conveyed personal and regional narratives through the use of shared design principles and the compelling language of pattern. The group was propelled to international fame through commercial contracts with major retailers (F. Schumacher\, Lord & Taylor)\, articles in leading periodicals such as Life\, and participation in seminal fine craft exhibitions.  \nThe publication Trailblazing Women Printmakers documents and celebrates the group’s tremendous success and the remarkable artistry of its members. While work of the Folly Cove Designers continues to inspire contemporary printmakers around the globe\, particularly women printmakers\, it remains relatively unknown in a broader context which Sarni’s book seeks to redress. Trailblazing Women Printmakers is Sarni’s debut book and was awarded the 2024 Historic New England Book Prize. \nThe Manship family was related by marriage to several Folly Cove Designers. The acorn press formerly owned by designer Eino Natti is part of Manship Artists Residency’s collection. The press is currently on loan to Gloucester’s O’Maley Innovation Middle School to enhance curriculum designed by the Cape Ann Museum and funded by the Gloucester Education Foundation.  \nThe hour-long Book Talk event will be held at Rockport Public Library at 17 School Street\, will begin at 5:30 pm\, and will be followed by a Q&A session. Books will be available for purchase thanks to Susie’s Stories\, and the author will be available to sign copies. \nReserve your FREE spot by clicking HERE. \n  \nABOUT ELENA M. SARNI \nElena M. Sarni is a humanities-based scholar\, writer\, and curator. She holds a BA in English and an MA in History and Museum Studies from the University of New Hampshire. She has worked at several museums and historical societies throughout New England and has held fellowships at Historic New England and New Hampshire Historical Society.  \n  \nABOUT GATHER 2025 \nGather 2025 is a month-long exploration of fiber and textile art in Greater Boston\, highlighting the vibrancy\, breadth\, challenges and future of this tactile medium. Gather 2025 is partnering with area institutions to bring an exciting program of exhibitions\, events\, lectures\, research presentations and hands-on participatory events.

DESCRIPTION:The Manship Artists Residency and The Cape Ann Guitar Society proudly presents Five Cent Fireballs\, an all female alt-bluegrass group. Based out of Charlottesville\, Virginia\, the Fireballs are coming up to Cape Ann for a week of composing\, rehearsing material for their debut album\, and offering instrumental and vocal workshops. Displaying instrumental virtuosity with stunning three-part harmonies\, their repertoire includes original songs as well as covers that pay tribute to women in bluegrass/folk such as Alice Gerrard and Hazel Dickens\, pioneering women of bluegrass\, and Nanci Griffith (folk/country). Throw in a few traditional bluegrass tunes\, “Talk About Suffering\,” and “Pretty Fair Maid\,” and you have a show that respects and reimagines bluegrass culture.

SUMMARY:Vessels of Slavery: Forget Me Not
DESCRIPTION:Vessels of Slavery: Forget Me Not is a collaboration between artists Susi Ryan\, Christle Rawlins-Jackson\, and IlaSahai Prouty. Using their collective expertise in community-based art and engagement\, quilting\, historical research\, and individual artistic practices\, these artists have conducted research and held several community conversations over the past two years. During this period\, they developed this summer’s outdoor installation at the Cape Ann Museum Green to explore and interpret the history of slavery on Cape Ann.  \nThe project has moved through four cycles\, each rooted in a week-long stay on Cape Ann: Reclamation\, Trade Winds\, Persistence\, and Honoring. The cumulative research and stories on display will feature six large ‘sail-quilts’.   \nDuring each cycle\, the artists conducted intimate investigations in the Cape Ann Museum Library & Archives and invited the community to consider the stories of the enslaved people of Cape Ann and the legacy of the slave economy for Cape Ann’s seaports. Parallel to their research\, the artists opened conversations with and between community members and institutions\, holding space within the collective for acknowledging\, grieving\, honoring\, and celebrating the enslaved and freed people of Cape Ann.   \nThe artists were brought together by the work of Doris Prouty\, an African American quilter who made Gloucester her home for nearly 50 years\, when her work was exhibited posthumously at the Cape Ann Museum in 2022. \nVessels of Slavery: Forget Me Not will be on display from August 10 – September 1\, 2024 at the Cape Ann Museum Green\, 13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA. The installation will be on view Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and Sundays from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. \nVessels of Slavery: Forget Me Not is coordinated and funded by the Cape Ann Museum with support from the MassHumanities Expanding Massachusetts Stories Grant and the Essex Heritage Partnership Grant. The residency stays at Manship Artists Residency are funded by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Prometheus Circle of the Manship Artists Residency\, the Revered Anne Deneen\, and the Bruce J. Anderson Foundation. \nProject description Courtesy the Cape Ann Museum.

SUMMARY:The Volker Goetze Quartet with Uthpala Eroshan
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to welcome you to the FUNDRAISER for the Manship Artists Residency featuring: \nThe Volker Goetze Quartet\nwith Uthpala Eroshan \nSaturday\, JUNE 15\, 2024\nDoors open 5:30 pm\nPerformance 6:00-7:30 pm \n  \nThis long-awaited debut of new music by the Volker Goetze Quartet\, features world renowned Sri Lankan drummer Uthpala Eroshan live in concert. A gorgeous experiment in cross-cultural collaboration\, “Musical Crossroads” brings together the traditions of Jazz and Kandyan percussion to create a new musical started vision born at the Manship Artist Residency in 2023\, and now ready to be shared with the world. \nInternational touring artist Volker Goetze’s new musical compositions transform ancient Sri Lankan folk tales inspired by Kandyan traditional dances into a contemporary context. They highlight stories of reincarnation\, sacrifice and selfless devotion. The ensemble unites prolific clarinetist Oran Etkin\, versatile bassist Alexis Cuadrado and Sri Lankan guru Uthpala Eroshan. Each musician brings his own richly informed cultural intelligence to the group’s sound\, which is especially distinguished by the unique timbre of the Gata Bera\, a Sri Lankan ceremonial drum played by Eroshan. Goetze’s quartet takes the listener on magical voyages driven by the mesmerizing cadence of Eroshan’s rhythms. Omitting a traditional drum set from this jazz quartet creates an unusually open field of opportunity for exciting horn solos and group improvisations over pulsing bass and Gata Bera grooves. \n  \nVolker Goetze Quartet \nVolker Goetze – Trumpet and Flugelhorn\, Compositions\nUthpala Eroshan – Geta Bera\nOran Etkin – Clarinet and Bass Clarinet\nAlexis Cuadrado – Double Bass \nLocation: Directions and parking details will be sent upon registration.\nContact info@ManshipArtists.org or 978-290-8438 with your accessibility needs. \nCasual attire. SUMMARY:Arpeggione Ensemble's Dreams and Dances
DESCRIPTION:The North Shore has never experienced anything quite like this before — a program combining historical instruments with new chamber arrangements of two of the most well-known pieces of 19th c. music\, plus original choreography that adds so much depth of depression\, wonder and excitement to the music on the program. This is not just seriously good music\, this is seriously fun!   ~  Andrea LeBlanc\, Co-Founder Arpeggione Ensemble \n\n\nArpeggione’s musicians will perform Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony and excerpts from Mendelssohn’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on instruments from the early 19th century. Renowned NYC-based choreographer and dancer Julian Donahue joined by Guilia Faria and Mónica Lima will bring these dreams to life outside at Starfield. This performance is made possible by grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, Beverly Cultural Council\, Gloucester Cultural Council\, and the Institute for Savings\, as well as funding from the Prometheus Circle of the Manship Artists Residency.

SUMMARY:The Net Works
DESCRIPTION:Manship Artists Residency invited Vermont artist Erika Senft Miller to create a public art project inspired by Gloucester’s fishing industry as a means to commemorate the City’s 400+ anniversary as America’s home port. Begun in 2020 during the pandemic\, Erika’s project\, The Net Works\, benefited from the proliferation of opportunities to attend events and connect with people virtually over zoom. \nSenft Miller’s phenomenal\, multi-sensory installation represented a collaborative effort of a team of artists and local fishermen. The installation at 52 Commercial Street\, was located in the heart of Gloucester’s working waterfront in a building that was a former seafood processing plant. A monumental fishing net served as a literal and metaphorical symbol in an immersive exhibit that included scents\, sounds\, and tactile experiences\, where visitors\, like fish\, moved through a passage of netting. The Net Works honored Gloucester’s iconic working waterfront and its generations of fisherman with the net symbolizing the interconnectedness of man and sea and the community itself. \nMulti-sensory artist Erika Senft Miller\, who has coordinated other community-based\, site-specific productions explains\, “No matter where we are\, we’re all connected. Whatever happens in the fishing community in Gloucester affects us all. The Net Works plunges us into this experience at a crucial moment in the life of America’s oldest fishing port.” \nSenft Miller described her vision for the exhibition as: “My team and I wanted to make something that you can touch\, smell\, hear\, move through\, and contemplate. We imagined an experience that entails walking through a full-scale fishing net and engaging with a mixed-media composition that incorporates the creaking of a boat\, the voices of the fishermen\, the sounds of blocks\, lines and the sea\, and scents of fishing life that have lingered for so many generations.” \nSenft Miller’s team consisted of the founder of Alice & the Magician Sensory Design\, Aaron Wisniewski\, to incorporate scent; media technologist and composer Miles Dean Ewell for sound as well as musician Neha Ewell; video by Menghan Wang; the photography of Paul Cary Goldberg; glass blown by Rich Arentzen; and Peter Waxdal of SenovvA\, Inc.\, who designed and installed interactive generative experiential features. Many members of the local fishing community contributed to this project\, especially Gloucester native and former fisherman James Tarrantino\, and commercial fisherman Captain Joseph Sanfilippo. \nResearch for the project was supported by Prometheus Circle of the Manship Artists Residency\, and a learning grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts. The project has also received grants from The Vermont Arts Council\, The Bruce J. Anderson Foundation\, and Awesome Gloucester. Support and contributions were also provided by Burlington City Arts\, The Cape Ann Museum\, and Maritime Gloucester. Monte Rome\, the owner of Intershell\, also donated the exhibition space. \nThe exhibition opened May 10th and ran through May 27th.

SUMMARY:New Poems: Rhyme + Heartbeat

The performance\, entitled New Poems Heartbeat + Rhyme\, will feature new poems from Pinsky\, backed by the melodious sounds of Strickland\, the harmonic excursions of keyboardist Russell Hoffman\, and the Latin rhythms of percussionist Ricardo Monzon. Navigating spoken word and instrumental jazz\, Pinsky and Strickland’s previous live ventures in jazz-poetry have oscillated between the expected and the avant-garde\, flouting genre conventions in pursuit of improvisatory magic. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness two modern masters of sound play outside the limits of language! Tickets are available at manshipartists.org – location details and directions will be provided with your reservation confirmation. \nRobert Pinsky served three terms as the United States Poet Laureate\, founding the Favorite Poem Project during his time in office. A recipient of the PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry and the William Carlos Williams award from the Poetry Society of America\, Pinsky has maintained a commitment to bolstering the place of poetry in American culture over his illustrious career. He currently serves as the Director of the Graduate Creative Writing Program at Boston University. The intersection between jazz improvisation and poetic performance has always fascinated Pinsky\, and Starfield is delighted to play host to the poet’s next exploration of this theme. \nVocalist\, saxophonist\, and Manship Artist Stan Strickland brings decades of jazz experience to Starfield. An influential member of the Boston scene since the 1970s\, Strickland has also performed extensively overseas\, playing with musical greats including Pharaoh Sanders\, Aretha Franklin\, and Herbie Mann. Offstage\, Strickland is a member of the faculty at the Berklee School of Music and the Co-Executive Director of Express Yourself\, an organization working to provide art immersion opportunities for children and adolescents with mental health struggles. Stan’s dedication to spreading joy through the power of music is visible every time he performs\, and we are happy to welcome him back to Lanesville this August. \nLocation: Directions and parking details will be sent upon registration. \nContact info@ManshipArtists.org or 978-290-8438 with your accessibility needs. \nCasual attire.
