SUMMARY:Vessels of Slavery: Forget Me Not
DESCRIPTION:Vessels of Slavery: Forget Me Not is a collaboration between artists Susi Ryan\, Christle Rawlins-Jackson\, and IlaSahai Prouty. Using their collective expertise in community-based art and engagement\, quilting\, historical research\, and individual artistic practices\, these artists have conducted research and held several community conversations over the past two years. During this period\, they developed this summer’s outdoor installation at the Cape Ann Museum Green to explore and interpret the history of slavery on Cape Ann.  \nThe project has moved through four cycles\, each rooted in a week-long stay on Cape Ann: Reclamation\, Trade Winds\, Persistence\, and Honoring. The cumulative research and stories on display will feature six large ‘sail-quilts’.   \nDuring each cycle\, the artists conducted intimate investigations in the Cape Ann Museum Library & Archives and invited the community to consider the stories of the enslaved people of Cape Ann and the legacy of the slave economy for Cape Ann’s seaports. Parallel to their research\, the artists opened conversations with and between community members and institutions\, holding space within the collective for acknowledging\, grieving\, honoring\, and celebrating the enslaved and freed people of Cape Ann.   \nThe artists were brought together by the work of Doris Prouty\, an African American quilter who made Gloucester her home for nearly 50 years\, when her work was exhibited posthumously at the Cape Ann Museum in 2022. \nVessels of Slavery: Forget Me Not will be on display from August 10 – September 1\, 2024 at the Cape Ann Museum Green\, 13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA. The installation will be on view Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and Sundays from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. \nVessels of Slavery: Forget Me Not is coordinated and funded by the Cape Ann Museum with support from the MassHumanities Expanding Massachusetts Stories Grant and the Essex Heritage Partnership Grant. The residency stays at Manship Artists Residency are funded by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Prometheus Circle of the Manship Artists Residency\, the Revered Anne Deneen\, and the Bruce J. Anderson Foundation. \nProject description Courtesy the Cape Ann Museum.

SUMMARY:The Volker Goetze Quartet with Uthpala Eroshan
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to welcome you to the FUNDRAISER for the Manship Artists Residency featuring: \nThe Volker Goetze Quartet\nwith Uthpala Eroshan \nSaturday\, JUNE 15\, 2024\nDoors open 5:30 pm\nPerformance 6:00-7:30 pm \n  \nThis long-awaited debut of new music by the Volker Goetze Quartet\, features world renowned Sri Lankan drummer Uthpala Eroshan live in concert. A gorgeous experiment in cross-cultural collaboration\, “Musical Crossroads” brings together the traditions of Jazz and Kandyan percussion to create a new musical started vision born at the Manship Artist Residency in 2023\, and now ready to be shared with the world. \nInternational touring artist Volker Goetze’s new musical compositions transform ancient Sri Lankan folk tales inspired by Kandyan traditional dances into a contemporary context. They highlight stories of reincarnation\, sacrifice and selfless devotion. The ensemble unites prolific clarinetist Oran Etkin\, versatile bassist Alexis Cuadrado and Sri Lankan guru Uthpala Eroshan. Each musician brings his own richly informed cultural intelligence to the group’s sound\, which is especially distinguished by the unique timbre of the Gata Bera\, a Sri Lankan ceremonial drum played by Eroshan. Goetze’s quartet takes the listener on magical voyages driven by the mesmerizing cadence of Eroshan’s rhythms. Omitting a traditional drum set from this jazz quartet creates an unusually open field of opportunity for exciting horn solos and group improvisations over pulsing bass and Gata Bera grooves. \n  \nVolker Goetze Quartet \nVolker Goetze – Trumpet and Flugelhorn\, Compositions\nUthpala Eroshan – Geta Bera\nOran Etkin – Clarinet and Bass Clarinet\nAlexis Cuadrado – Double Bass \nLocation: Directions and parking details will be sent upon registration.\nContact info@ManshipArtists.org or 978-290-8438 with your accessibility needs. \nCasual attire. DESCRIPTION:The North Shore has never experienced anything quite like this before — a program combining historical instruments with new chamber arrangements of two of the most well-known pieces of 19th c. music\, plus original choreography that adds so much depth of depression\, wonder and excitement to the music on the program. This is not just seriously good music\, this is seriously fun!   ~  Andrea LeBlanc\, Co-Founder Arpeggione Ensemble \n\n\nArpeggione’s musicians will perform Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony and excerpts from Mendelssohn’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on instruments from the early 19th century. Renowned NYC-based choreographer and dancer Julian Donahue joined by Guilia Faria and Mónica Lima will bring these dreams to life outside at Starfield. This performance is made possible by grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, Beverly Cultural Council\, Gloucester Cultural Council\, and the Institute for Savings\, as well as funding from the Prometheus Circle of the Manship Artists Residency.

SUMMARY:The Net Works
DESCRIPTION:Manship Artists Residency invited Vermont artist Erika Senft Miller to create a public art project inspired by Gloucester’s fishing industry as a means to commemorate the City’s 400+ anniversary as America’s home port. Begun in 2020 during the pandemic\, Erika’s project\, The Net Works\, benefited from the proliferation of opportunities to attend events and connect with people virtually over zoom. \nSenft Miller’s phenomenal\, multi-sensory installation represented a collaborative effort of a team of artists and local fishermen. The installation at 52 Commercial Street\, was located in the heart of Gloucester’s working waterfront in a building that was a former seafood processing plant. A monumental fishing net served as a literal and metaphorical symbol in an immersive exhibit that included scents\, sounds\, and tactile experiences\, where visitors\, like fish\, moved through a passage of netting. The Net Works honored Gloucester’s iconic working waterfront and its generations of fisherman with the net symbolizing the interconnectedness of man and sea and the community itself. \nMulti-sensory artist Erika Senft Miller\, who has coordinated other community-based\, site-specific productions explains\, “No matter where we are\, we’re all connected. Whatever happens in the fishing community in Gloucester affects us all. The Net Works plunges us into this experience at a crucial moment in the life of America’s oldest fishing port.” \nSenft Miller described her vision for the exhibition as: “My team and I wanted to make something that you can touch\, smell\, hear\, move through\, and contemplate. We imagined an experience that entails walking through a full-scale fishing net and engaging with a mixed-media composition that incorporates the creaking of a boat\, the voices of the fishermen\, the sounds of blocks\, lines and the sea\, and scents of fishing life that have lingered for so many generations.” \nSenft Miller’s team consisted of the founder of Alice & the Magician Sensory Design\, Aaron Wisniewski\, to incorporate scent; media technologist and composer Miles Dean Ewell for sound as well as musician Neha Ewell; video by Menghan Wang; the photography of Paul Cary Goldberg; glass blown by Rich Arentzen; and Peter Waxdal of SenovvA\, Inc.\, who designed and installed interactive generative experiential features. Many members of the local fishing community contributed to this project\, especially Gloucester native and former fisherman James Tarrantino\, and commercial fisherman Captain Joseph Sanfilippo. \nResearch for the project was supported by Prometheus Circle of the Manship Artists Residency\, and a learning grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts. The project has also received grants from The Vermont Arts Council\, The Bruce J. Anderson Foundation\, and Awesome Gloucester. Support and contributions were also provided by Burlington City Arts\, The Cape Ann Museum\, and Maritime Gloucester. Monte Rome\, the owner of Intershell\, also donated the exhibition space. \nThe exhibition opened May 10th and ran through May 27th.

The performance\, entitled New Poems Heartbeat + Rhyme\, will feature new poems from Pinsky\, backed by the melodious sounds of Strickland\, the harmonic excursions of keyboardist Russell Hoffman\, and the Latin rhythms of percussionist Ricardo Monzon. Navigating spoken word and instrumental jazz\, Pinsky and Strickland’s previous live ventures in jazz-poetry have oscillated between the expected and the avant-garde\, flouting genre conventions in pursuit of improvisatory magic. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness two modern masters of sound play outside the limits of language! Tickets are available at manshipartists.org – location details and directions will be provided with your reservation confirmation. \nRobert Pinsky served three terms as the United States Poet Laureate\, founding the Favorite Poem Project during his time in office. A recipient of the PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry and the William Carlos Williams award from the Poetry Society of America\, Pinsky has maintained a commitment to bolstering the place of poetry in American culture over his illustrious career. He currently serves as the Director of the Graduate Creative Writing Program at Boston University. The intersection between jazz improvisation and poetic performance has always fascinated Pinsky\, and Starfield is delighted to play host to the poet’s next exploration of this theme. \nVocalist\, saxophonist\, and Manship Artist Stan Strickland brings decades of jazz experience to Starfield. An influential member of the Boston scene since the 1970s\, Strickland has also performed extensively overseas\, playing with musical greats including Pharaoh Sanders\, Aretha Franklin\, and Herbie Mann. Offstage\, Strickland is a member of the faculty at the Berklee School of Music and the Co-Executive Director of Express Yourself\, an organization working to provide art immersion opportunities for children and adolescents with mental health struggles. Stan’s dedication to spreading joy through the power of music is visible every time he performs\, and we are happy to welcome him back to Lanesville this August. \nLocation: Directions and parking details will be sent upon registration. \nContact info@ManshipArtists.org or 978-290-8438 with your accessibility needs. \nCasual attire. SUMMARY:Shackleton's play with music - The Chorus at the Edge of the World
DESCRIPTION:The Chorus at the Edge of the World :  \nA workshop reading of a play with live music recreating Ernest Shackleton’s and the crew of the Endurance’s incredible and inspiring journey. \nThursday\, 17 August\, 7 pm \nDoors open at 6:30 pm \nErnest Shackleton was a hero of the Great age of Polar Exploration who stood apart from his peers for two reasons. \nFirst\, he paid more attention to having fun than he did to the perils of the ice. He wrote\, “I feel the success of our work depends as much on the general attitude of the members to each other as on the work they individually have to do.” He picked is crew for the instruments they played and the jokes they told. No one expected him or his crew to return. \nSecond\, despite the coldest temperatures in the world\, a shipwreck\, an attempted mutiny\, starvation\, an 800 mile journey through the roughest seas in the world in a twenty foot boat\, and a feat of climbing that wouldn’t be repeated for fifty years\, Shackleton brought every one of his crew home alive. Singing all the way. None of his peers could have done the same. \nSometimes inspiration looks like lunacy. \nThe Chorus at the Edge of the World is a play featuring live music: all acoustic\, all from the catalogue of Chanteys\, whaling songs and folk music that the Endurance crew would have used. In honor of Shackleton\, we will make it fun. \n-Richard Thieriot\, Shackelton Enthusiast\, Playwright and Actor\, and Manship Artist \nPLEASE NOTE THIS IS A WORKSHOP READING WITH SCRIPTS.  \nLocation: Directions and parking details will be sent upon registration. \nContact info@ManshipArtists.org or 978-290-8438 with your accessibility needs. \nCasual attire. SUMMARY:Thinking Ahead In A Reckless Age: Public Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:CAN WE TALK? \nThe conversation between author\, journalist and climate activist Bina Venkataraman and Christopher Lydon\, revered host of WBUR and NPR’s “The Connection” and “Open Source” took place before a full-house at the Shalin Liu Performance Center – shortly before COVID-19 ended all gatherings. Manship Artists is grateful to Ken Kinna of B-Roll Films who filmed the event; watch the interview highlights by clicking here. \nThe conversation takes an almost Socratic form\, with Lydon questioning Venkataraman’s decision to remain optimistic despite all the current threats to our existence. Lydon’s is the voice of all of us who feel helpless in the face of global threats like the Corona Virus and climate change. He asks Venkataraman how she can justify her optimism in what she acknowledges is a “reckless age.” Drawing on her recent book\, The Optimist’s Telescope\, she cites examples\, drawn from many parts of the world\, of disasters averted by forward-thinking individuals and communities. Her optimism stems from her belief that we can still choose to do better if we learn to think ahead. \nThe message – and challenge – that Venkataraman poses for us is to think of ourselves\, no matter how old – or young – we are\, as ancestors as well as descendants – to ask ourselves what is it that we\, as individuals and as communities\, will leave to those who come after us. It is a dare worth taking. \nThis program was funded by the Prometheus Circle\, a donor-giving society of the Manship Artists Residency + Studios. Manship Artists is also grateful to the following who helped in many ways: Tony Beadle\, Rockport Music; Ken Kinna\, B-Roll Films; Gail McCarthy\, The Gloucester Daily Times; Rick Moore\, Connections Podcast; Stephen Bridges\, Bridges Design; Esther and Chris Pullman; Mary and Harry Hintlian; 1623 Studios; Arwen Severance + Charlee Bianchini\, The Bookstore of Gloucester; Tzar Fedorsky.

SUMMARY:Quarry Dance VII
DESCRIPTION:Windhover Performing Arts Center has presented dynamic and exciting Quarry Dances at various quarries located throughout the Cape Ann area for the past six years. This year\, Windhover teams up with Manship Artists Residency to present Quarry Dance Vll on the grounds of the late renowned American sculptor Paul Manship. This 15+ acre site features two pristine\, private quarries\, (Canney’s Pit and Butman’s Pit\, aka “Manship Quarry”)\, several studios and a historic 1856 barn. \nAs in previous years\, the Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre will create a site-specific modern dance in and around Canney’s Pit\, the larger private quarry on the site that features ledges\, cliffs\, and stunning views. Continuing the legacy of working artists on Cape Ann\, this event will capture movements derived from Paul Manship’s mythic sculptures\, which move and flow like Greek sculpture. Images of Manship’s works will be on view\, inspiring the dance. Perhaps his best known work is the Prometheus sculpture at the entrance to Rockefeller Center\, located by the skating rink. Quarry Dance Vll will open with Sarah Slifer Swift reprising a solo performance of Prometheus\, a dance choreographed by the late Ina Hahn. The piece was inspired by Manship’s sculpture of the Titan who brought fire to man.  Ms. Swift is the founder of MAGMA (Movement Arts Gloucester Massachusetts) a dance and performance center located in downtown Gloucester. \nPerformances of Quarry Dance Vll are free and open to the public. Donations are strongly suggested. No reservations are necessary\, however all performances are weather dependent. If there is rain\, that performance will be canceled. The duration of each performance is approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. \nParking has been arranged at the Lanesville Community Center at 8 Vulcan Street\, Gloucester for all four performances. It is a short walk from the Lanesville Community Center to the Manship (MARS) estate. \nThere is also parking available at St Paul Lutheran Church at 1123 Washington Street on Friday late afternoon\, Saturday late afternoon and Sunday. And the Orthodox Congregational Church at 1120 Washington Street allows parking on Friday late afternoon\, Saturday morning and Saturday late afternoon\, but not on Sunday. \nVolunteers will usher the way for those on foot. Shuttle service will be available 45 minutes before each performance and afterwards for those who do not want to walk\, starting and concluding at the Lanesville Community Center. \nSeating is on a first-come first-served basis. Chairs will be provided; however you are encouraged to bring blankets and sit on the ground in front of the quarry. Feel free to bring water. Space is limited\, and seats cannot be reserved. \nFor further information\, please check the Windhover website and the Manship Artists Residency’s website. \nBoth organizations are non-profit 501©3 and contributions are tax deductible. Major funding has been made possible for Quarry Dance Vll by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation\, the primary sponsor\, plus the Rockport and Gloucester Cultural Councils. For questions\, please contact MARS Board President\, Rebecca Reynolds\, or Windhover’s Executive Director\, Lisa Hahn.
