FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Manship Artists Residency hires first ever Director of Development David Freilach to enhance the program’s efforts to support its numerous artistic and environmental activities.

Gloucester, MA – Manship Artists Residency is pleased to announce that David Freilach, until recently the Director of Development for the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy, has joined its team as Director of Development. He brings a wealth of experience in non-profit development and arts administration ranging from small alternative spaces to internationally recognized museums.  He has developed friends and membership programs, overseen a variety of special events, and has expertise in foundation giving, major gifts, and planned gifts.

Executive Director Rebecca Reynolds notes that “We are excited to welcome David Freilach to our Team as we launch our next phase of transformative growth and create a foundation that establishes the sustainability and vibrant future of the residency.  David’s background at arts and cultural organizations makes him a great fit. David is eager to apply his experience and skill to his passion for building community through the arts and looks forward to sharing the gifts of our Manship Artists locally and beyond our Cape.”

At the Addison Gallery, Freilach was involved in all fundraising activities, including grant writing and major gifts, resulting in six and seven-figure gifts for endowments and named spaces. It was there that he became familiar with Manship Artists Residency. “I had the best introduction to the program and founder Rebecca Reynolds. The Addison collaborated on an exhibition with the Manship Artists Residency, sending four photographers to the Manship property to create new work over the course of a year. Their resulting work was exhibited alongside Paul Manship’s sculpture in the Galleries, and as part of our donor enrichment programming, the Addision brought donors to Gloucester to experience Paul Manship’s estate for themselves. It was inspiring to walk through such an historic and important place in America’s cultural history and I look forward to helping continue and contributing to this legacy.”

While serving as the Assistant (and Acting) Director of the MIT List Visual Arts Center, a contemporary art space known for its cutting edge international programming and extraordinary public art sited throughout the campus, Freilach oversaw all aspects of development and administration, including two installations at the US Pavillion of the Venice Biennale. Prior to these roles in Massachusetts, he worked with a variety of art spaces in New York City, including the Queens Museum of Art, the Museum of the City of New York, Thread Waxing Space, and the Guggenheim Museum.

Freilach, recently appointed to the City of Cambridge’s Public Art Commision, has served on panels for the Cambridge Arts Council and Institute of Museum and Library Services. His education includes a Masters in Arts Administration from NYU, where he has taught marketing the visual arts; undergraduate coursework in art history at Williams College; and graduation for the Getty Research Institute’s Museum Leadership Institute.
