Marcia Ciro

Marcia Ciro holds a BA in Graphic Design from Rhode Island School of Design and an MA in Environmental Studies from Antioch New England. Her practice is rooted in an enduring interest in communication—between humans, species, and environments. She has exhibited photography and drawing nationally, and her artist’s books are held in museum and library collections in the U.S. and internationally. Ciro has been a finalist for the Mass Cultural Council, received a Studio Workshop Residency from Women’s Studio Workshop, and was awarded the Great Marsh artist’s grant in 2025. She has taught at the former Art Institute of Boston, College of the Holy Cross, the DeCordova Museum, and other institutions, and lives and works in Watertown, Massachusetts.

Ciro’s work employs photography, drawing, and film to explore perception, connection, and humanity’s place within the environment. She seeks out images that reveal something previously unseen, often linking disparate elements to create new meaning and to reflect on human impact and systems of value. Working frequently in series, she engages narrative and sequence, particularly through the artist’s book form, where concept, text, image, and structure are given equal weight. Photography—especially infrared—serves as a tool to access an otherworldly, hidden dimension, which she expands through layering, montage, and hybrid processes that blur the boundaries between photography and drawing.
