Michele Brody is an installation and mixed-media environmental artist whose practice is grounded in an MFA in Fiber and Material Studies and informed by the ancient traditions of craft and the manipulation of natural materials. Drawing on the legacies of Post-Minimalism, Land Art, and Process Art, her work explores themes of time and materiality, with key influences including Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse, Robert Smithson, and Ann Hamilton. She received a BA from Sarah Lawrence College in 1989 and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1994, and has since maintained an active studio and exhibition practice alongside her work as an artist-educator, primarily in New York City.
Brody’s community-based practice emphasizes collaboration and site responsiveness, engaging diverse communities across the U.S. and internationally to create work shaped by local histories, environments, and cultural narratives. She recently completed a two-year residency at the Bronx River Art Center, culminating in a 2025 solo survey exhibition, and has presented solo exhibitions at venues including the Bronx Museum of the Arts and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, among others. A frequent recipient of grants and residencies from organizations such as the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the New York Foundation for the Arts, she has also completed major public art commissions in the Bronx for the MTA and NYC Department of Education. Her honors include Best 3-D Entry at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids and Second Prize in Fiber Art Now’s Excellence in Fibers IX (2024).
