HOCKNEY REPRODUCTION(S) opens on September 11th at Manship Artists Residency. It is a show about reproduction made up entirely of reproductions. In addition to over 90 rare posters, the show will include prints, fax collages, many books and catalogues, photos, movies, and a variety of other media. A series of lectures and interactive events is also on the schedule.

The exhibition is also about friendship. Curator Bing McGilvray and world-renowned artist David Hockney shared a unique and special friendship than spanned over five decades. Bing developed the concept of this show while in residence at Manship in June of 2025. Knowing he had accumulated a wealth of Hockney material over the years, he realized he had the makings of a wonderful exhibition, and the Manship barn would be an ideal place to mount it. Rebecca readily agreed and over the ensuing months the show expanded in scope as other friends agree to lend posters to the show. David Hockney also became an enthusiastic supporter, sending more from his L.A. studio.
Hockney knew that most people would only see his work in reproduction. He took great care assuring his imagery would be of the highest graphic quality to stand out amidst the inundation of pictures everyone is subjected to daily. Each piece in the show is an example of the enormous variety of Hockney’s oeuvre—his radical optic discoveries that shook up the art historians, his mastery of every medium, his endless inventions, and his innovative use of technology. David embraced every advancement of the printing revolution of the 1980s—personal computers, digital photography, office copiers, fax machines, and video cameras, to name a few. The iPhone and iPad were introduced in the 21st Century, and Hockney was among the first to use these new tools for artistic purposes.

Sadly, David Hockney passed away at age 88 on June 11th of this year. Since then, our exhibition has taken on a more poignant urgency. David wanted everyone to own and enjoy his work. He considered it his mission to spread joy, beauty, and the pleasure of looking, around the world to counteract the trouble and sorrow he knew affected us all. Through a life-long, prodigious output of reproductions, he far surpassed that goal. The Art of David Hockney was a gift to all humankind.

HOCKNEY REPRODUCTION(S) is an exhibition about art and friendship, mounted by artists and friends, that we are thrilled to share free of charge with all our art-loving friends in Gloucester and beyond.
